The Differences Between Anime and Cartoon

Cartoon is a term that once referred to fine art during the renaissance period. Somehow, though, the term's meaning evolved (or devolved, depending on how you look at it) into humorous and witty illustrations and, finally, into animated programs meant to entertain people, mostly children. For, clarity, the term 'cartoon' in this article shall be referring to the animated programs. Recently, however, a new term has been coined: Anime. And the distinction between these two has caused much confusion.

Strictly speaking though, there should be no distinction between anime and cartoon. Anime is a term used by the Japanese to refer to animated cartoons, from their own country and from others as well. Somehow, though, the world started using the term anime in reference to Japanese cartoons exclusively. Japanese animation was once called japanimation, but this term was aptly discarded when the term 'Anime' was put into use.

Some say that they see absolutely no difference between the two, even going so far as to classify both cartoons and anime as 'childish' because of the nature of how they are presented, much to the woe of anime fans. Technically, there's no official difference and they are somewhat correct. But you only have to watch a single episode of any anime series and you'll see that anime is far more than your usual slapstick comedy man-tripping-on-a-banana-peal early morning cartoons. There is a real and profound difference between the two besides their spellings: Anime is so much more than 'just a cartoon'.

Storylines/Plots

Cartoons usually have a simple and defined plot. And they're usually about the good guys fighting the bad guys. Cartoons rarely go beyond that old cliché. Most Anime series, on the other hand, are also about the same good vs. evil but the plots are rarely simple and rarely predictable. You'll find an element of politics, religion, humanity, and a score of several other abstract concepts within an anime. Whereas cartoons are just about 'evil' cats chasing 'innocent' mice or a hero defending himself and others from a very evil bully. Anime can blur the lines between good and evil so much that you'll be left wondering which side is really right. Look at the plot of Gundam, there aren't any good guys or bad guys. They're both fighting for a cause - a worthy one, and both sides are prepared to do good and evil to achieve their goals. Look at the Wave Country arc of Naruto. Zabuza, evil as he was, had evoked more sympathetic tears than any of the typical Disney antagonists. There are, however, few exceptions to the 'cartoons are simple' rule. There are cartoon series that are far advanced like X-men.

In terms of humor, anime goes beyond the slapstick comedy that cartoons offer. There won't be any corny joke about the chicken crossing the road with anime. There won't even be the quintessential banana peal. Anime humor is deep and witty. However, it is to be noted that cartoons are mostly for kids. Anime can be for an adult audience; it mostly is, actually. There are even times when anime plots are hardly suited for children.

Characters

In cartoons, there's a protagonist, an antagonist, and a damsel in distress. Their roles are well-defined and clear and the characters always act according to their roles. In anime, however, the damsel in distress may very well become the antagonist, leaving the protagonist in distress. There's no knowing what to expect in anime. Anime characters, a lot of times, are developed overtime through trials and growth, while cartoon characters remain the same from when the show started. (Of course, there are exceptions such as Spiderman.) Since there's an ongoing plot, Anime characters actually grow up and may even produce the next generation for the series. Anime fans tend to get into the characters a lot deeper because of the characters' depth and charm. Consider Naruto; viewers see him growing up from an infant to a young powerful ninja, the way he relates to people, the way he learns new techniques, and the way he evolves visually. That is one of the chief reasons for popularities of anime over plain cartoons.

Ty Pennington Facts - The Secret to His Success

Ty Pennington is the host of ABC's popular show, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 19, 1964. His real name is Tygert Bruton Pennington.

Ty Pennington is a spokesperson for ADHD Experts on Call. He personally struggled with hyperactivity as a child, as not enough was known about this condition at the time to provide appropriate treatment. He was not given medication for his ADHD until he was seventeen years old. His mother is a psychologist whose primary focus is on ADHD and depression. She provided behavioral reinforcement to help him deal with his hyperactivity as a child.

As a youngster, he learned the art of woodworking. This enjoyable hobby gave him the foundation for his later career as a carpenter. It was with his carpentry skills that Ty worked his way through college at the Kennesaw State University. He earned his undergraduate degree in graphic design.

While still in college, Ty began his career as a model, working both in television and print advertisements.

He became a set designer, with his breakthrough being on the popular show "Trading Spaces." When the team of designers was being chosen for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, he was selected to lead the team. He is so well-motivated that in January, 2005, he taped the show while in the hospital following an appendectomy.

Ty Pennington had an online furniture company, "Furniture Unlimited;" and also published a do-it-yourself home improvement book, prior to publishing his magazine, "Ty Pennington at Home." Both Furniture Unlimited and Ty Pennington at Home are available online.

In May, 2007, his DUI arrest resulted in a ninety-day suspension of his driver's license, a fine of $390, an alcohol treatment program, community service, and 36 months probation. He admitted his mistake, and took full responsibility for his actions.

Ty Pennington and his wife Andrea live in Venice, California.

As you can imagine, Ty has a very busy schedule. So he works hard at getting the necessary rest his body needs to keep up with his mini empire. While there is variability between each of us in how much sleep we need, the National Sleep Foundation has noted that the need for sleep changes as we age. Most adults need 7 to 9 hours a sleep a night.

Water Retention

If you think you are too big for your clothes, your face is puffy and looks swollen when you get up in the morning, then you are suffering from water retention. The other symptoms are bloating of the stomach or tightness of the ring in the finger. Your shoes will pinch and all these events will cause you a lot of discomfort. This is called water retention or edema.

Usually, our bodies have the ability to balance the water levels in the body depending on the food that we eat or drink. But at times, this balance tends to go haywire. The leading causes of edema are excessive salt and alcohol intake, long periods of inactivity and monthly hormonal fluctuations or pregnancy in women. A sudden gain in weight or swollen ankles is the only signs of water retention.

The common home remedies for water retention are:

o Go into deep water: Exercising in the swimming pool will be an excellent remedy for curing this problem. This is due to the water pressure forcing out the excess water out of the tissues and into the bladder. It is advised to exercise gently in the pool at the temperature of 80 to 90 degrees F. if you are pregnant, avoid water above 100 degrees.

o Avoid diuretics: Though diuretics are effective for the flushing out of excess water in the people with the heart, kidney or liver disease, they can also cause rebound edema. Continuous usage will activate the salt and water retaining hormones and when stopped, these hormones are activated and cause water retention.

o Minimize salt intake: Avoid foods high in salt like hotdogs, burgers, pizzas etc. They contain very high salt content and the fluid released will remain in the body till kidneys have a chance to excrete them which is about 24 hours.

o Exercise continuously: Exercise has been shown to reduce the water retention by flushing out the water and salt through sweating, higher respiration and increased urine flow. If you have been sitting for a long time, walk up and down or climb stairs every hour. You can also try the following exercise: point the toes downward, then raise them up as high as possible which pumps up the calf and foot muscles. You can also raise your hands up overhead.

o Increase fluid intake: Water moves through the kidneys and bladder thus diluting the urine. It becomes easier for the kidneys to flush diluted urine out along with the salt contained in it. Plain water is the best option, since juices, sodas and colas have salt content.

o Sip on the herbal tea: Many herbs are slightly diuretic. Parsley is the best known one. Take two teaspoons of dried leaves for each cup of boiling water and seep for ten minutes. Drink three cups a day.

o Lie down with feet up: Recline with the feet up in the raised position. This will allow the fluid collected in the legs to go to the circulatory systems and from there to the kidneys for excretion.

If these tips do not work or if you have heart and kidney problems consult a doctor. You can also consult a doctor if you have a pitting edema where an indentation remains when you press the skin.

Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla - The Differences Between Fame and Forgotten

I recently saw the movie "The Prestige". The story is about two ferociously rival magicians and is set in the 1890's. A sub-plot in the movie concerns the largely forgotten rivalry between scientists and inventors Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. Entrepreneurs today can learn much from the Edison/Tesla saga.

Thomas Edison is one of the most famous and revered Americans of all time, and deservedly so. School children are taught that he harnessed electricity, invented the light bulb and the phonograph. He was awarded 1093 patents during his long and rewarding creative life. His summer laboratory in Fort Myer, Florida is still a major tourist destination. In addition, Edison earned millions of dollars by commercializing his patents and product innovations. To this day we have all benefited from his genius.

Nikola Tesla, on the other hand, is virtually unknown today. He was born in Serbia, moved to America and became one of the most renowned scientists of his day. He was in many ways, the prototype for the "mad scientist" so often depicted in books and movies. His eccentricity and poor business decisions were the stuff of legends. And yet, Tesla's inventions and scientific advances are as important in our contemporary lives as Edison's.

As a young immigrant scientist Tesla actually worked for Edison. Edison held the patent on Direct Current (DC) and was, as always, aggressively pursuing commercialization of his patents. The famous banker J. P. Morgan was an early financial backer of Edison's DC. Edison constructed a generator in New York City that could provide the miracle of light in homes, including Morgan's Murray Hill mansion. It was considered a wonder of the day.

Tesla, however, recognized that DC had serious limitations, specifically in delivery of electricity across a vast grid. He championed Alternating Current (AC). Edison was furious. AC was a direct attack on his patents. He had no commercial claim to AC power generation. Tesla left Edison and the two great scientists became lifelong enemies.

Tesla introduced his theories on AC to George Westinghouse, another foe of Edison. The two became partners and a race between the devotees of AC and DC current commenced. Westinghouse and Tesla believed AC to be superior to DC because of the arc and greater footprint of power the system could deliver.

Edison, an unusual combination of man of science and excellent business- man, conducted an aggressive; some say savage public relations campaign to support his convictions that DC was the better technology. He conducted public electrocutions of animals in an effort to prove that DC was a safer, cleaner source of power. He even allowed DC to be used in the first electrocution of a death sentence criminal. This public display was botched and the criminal was re-electrocuted in a horrible manner. The public was shocked.

Meanwhile, Tesla was tasked by Westinghouse to harness the power of Niagara Falls to generate safe, widely disseminated electricity by utilizing the AC technology. The test and subsequent grid performance confirmed that AC was the superior technology. Morgan and Edison were forced to purchase interests in AC.

Thomas Edison prospered for the rest of his days. His connections with J.P. Morgan lead to the establishment of General Electric, one of the world's great enterprises to this day. He died rich, revered, and famous.

Tesla was an immense contributor to the evolution of our modern power system. The many scientific tasks involved in electrifying the United States and the world would have occurred much more slowly without his inventions and creativity. Tesla was crucial to the perfection and acceptance of AC, the standard used to this day. And yet Tesla died broke, alone, flustered.

Edison invented the light bulb. However, without electricity delivered widely, safely and affordably the light bulb was of little value. A car without the internal combustion engine is a wagon. Similarly, Tesla's perfection of AC was the tool that made the light bulb so valuable. Tesla's success inadvertently affirmed Edison's legacy.

Edison could sell. He was a genius at self-promotion. He could seek and obtain capital based on his reputation. He had charm and charisma. Edison created a legend for himself.

Tesla had none of these qualities. He made poor business choices. His reputation for being difficult closed many promising commercial doors. Tesla was dark and dour. English was his second language and he was never comfortable in a public format. His science has become obfuscated by his many futuristic predictions. Much of modern pseudo-science and today's UFO acolytes rely on morsels of Tesla's preaching.

The ability to commercialize inventions is the key difference between creative types and successful entrepreneurs. We all know people with vibrant imaginations and inventiveness. We all also know how few of these people succeed at successfully converting imagination into reality.

A successful entrepreneur needs a variety of skills and talents in order to cut through the din of our very competitive marketplace. Successful designers and engineers typically make great employees, unless they can communicate, sell, market and strategize. The inventor lacking in these skills has many other potential routes to success. Licensing, partnering and alliances are viable options.

Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Bill Gates and Ray Kroc are stellar examples of what it takes to succeed. They are multi-talented, adaptable and visionary. Nikola Tesla was a genius, but in only one area. His science is invaluable. Today, the personal, business and historic legacy of Tesla is mostly forgotten. Every student learns about Thomas Edison. It took an afternoon at the movies to remind me fleetingly of Nikola Tesla's important contributions.

The Avatar Movie by James Cameron - Non-Spoiler Review

To encapsulate the Avatar Movie by James Cameron, it promises to be one of the most spectacular and thrilling movies that you have ever seen.

And this promise is backed up by the single fact that the guy directing this $400 million plus movie is none other than Mr. Titanic, James Cameron. Now, this man has an impressive pedigree that resulted in billions of dollars of movies over his career.

His latest project is of course, The Avatar movie. I will give you a little taste of this movie but of course I won't spoil it for you by giving out too much information or revealing the conclusion of the story. That would be mean and it isn't in me to do that sort of thing!

So to continue...

The year is 2154 and Earth has been mining a faraway, Earth-sized moon that has the unfortunate name of Pandora. And the mineral is called, Unobtainium which is the cure for the energy crisis. This mining operation has be ongoing for 30 years and now is encroaching the region that belongs to the indigenous race of humanoids called the Na'vi. They are about 3 meters tall, have a tail and glow in the dark.

As you can imagine, they are NOT happy about the mining operations but Earth is so worried about them that they send in the gung-ho Marines to subdue them.

Unfortunately, the atmosphere of Pandora is quite toxic to humans and there is new technology called, Avatar program that wires up the human mind to an Avatar "skin" which is made up of human and Na'vi DNA to look exactly like the Na'vi, but controlled by the humans on the ship outside of the world. Sort of like the U.S. military controlling the Predator Drones from their bases on the other side of the planet.

So anyway, our hero by the name of Jake Sully cannot use his legs. And the Avatar program is very appealing to him because he enables him to become a wholly functioning being again, as a Na'vi warrior that the military sends into Pandora to infiltrate the Na'vi tribe.

And of course, Jake's Avatar is rescued by a beautiful and lithe Na'vi princess by the name of Neytiri. And of course there are complications when Jake falls in love with her.

So what to do?

Well, I certainly won't spoil it for you! You are definitely going to have to watch the movie. And I don't think you will be disappointed. There are plots within plots. New technology. Beautiful and fascinating flora and fauna plus some really fierce and dangerous animals on Pandora.

With all that going on, you won't lose sight of the message of the movie, that Jake is going to have to make a decision to obey his superiors and destroy the Na'vi people or to lead the Na'vi tribe against the intruders that want to pillage and plunder the natural resources of Pandora at little or no cost to themselves.

Resurrecting the Champ - Essential Life Lessons

Resurrecting the Champ was a pleasant surprise for a movie; the acting of Josh Hartnett is exceptional, and Samuel L. Jackson is great as usual. The movie contains such an array of life lessons; what it takes to be a hero to yourself and those you love. It also covers the issue of forgiveness, and how important it is to forgive those who have wronged you. Finally, it teaches that while others may try to deceit/trick you, everyone is just looking out for their own best interests.

Champ (Jackson) is not who we originally thought he was. In fact, he is pretending to be someone else. A boxer named Tommy Kincaid impersonating Bob Satterfield, whom Kincaid believed to be better than him. Instead of trying to imitate Satterfield's positive characteristics, he disregards himself as a person, and pretends to be somebody he's not. In the end of the movie, Kincaid finally learns the meaning of self-acceptance, and becomes proud of his own identity.

Erik Kernan (Hartnett) is a sports/entertainment journalist for a living, and has the privilege of meeting celebrities/athletes on the job. It is revealed that Kernan's main goal is to be a great father to his son. He often bends the truth about athletes that he meets, because he thinks it will make his son love him more. He wants to be the perfect hero, but doesn't realize how unnecessary it is to strive for perfection. To be a hero as a father, you must demonstrate the key ability to give and receive love (think of a sponge). Fortunately, Kernan had this ability, and was a great father because of it.

Did Kincaid have a good reason to lie about his identity? No. Was it the right thing to pretend to be someone else, and risk a friends career because of it? Absolutely not! But Kincaid deserves the forgiveness he received from Kernan, because we all need forgiveness to get back on track. Kernan is undoubtedly angry about all of Kincaid's lies, but still has the state of mind to save their friendship. If others do not forgive us for the wrong we have done, we will be stuck in a very awkward situation (sometimes worse). The key to remember is that we all act out of self interest, and we all make mistakes. Forgiveness may be difficult to give, but is best for all parties in the long term.

Everyone wants the best deal for themselves and those that they love. Kernan wanted a better job for himself, and Kincaid wanted to be a young championship boxer. Kernan took action by finding Kincaid, and hoping to elevate his journalist status through a controversial article. Kincaid just wanted to be praised by others. By giving Kernan false information, he was hoping to increase his social status and reputation. All actions are justifiable by the one taking the initiative. Not all people will understand why some actions are taken (crime, for instance), but the one who took the action will always have justification.

Resurrecting the Champ is a stupendous film, containing many essential life lessons. Some of them are self-acceptance, being a hero to yourself and others, how to forgive, and insight as to why some people take questionable actions. After you have watched the movie, take in all of the insight, and Resurrect the Champ inside of you!

They are always adding more but the list is currently pretty extensive. Right now I know they have ESPN, ABC, Animal Planet, and a bunch of UK channels and movie channels as well.

Soap Opera Awards

Soap operas have been a success on TV for quite some time. As a matter of fact, many of them we have grown up with and our parents have grown up with. This makes them a very unique part of an individual's day. This is because they follow the lives of the characters from the very beginning. You have your primary characters and then you have secondary characters that are in and out throughout the life of the show. You may even notice that new characters are introduced from time-to-time. With this is the soap opera awards.

The soap opera awards present awards to the top soap stars for their unprecedented performances. These awards are presented to newcomers and even the oldies for some kind of memorable performance that they have presented the world with. This can be for the best villain or an individual who has made some sort of outstanding achievement in the show.

The history

When you think about it, the soap opera awards have come a long way. At one time the awards were called "soapies," which was a bit of an embarrassing name. As of 1977 the "soapies" were the only awards that were voted on by the fans rather than a committee of some kind. They did not have a glitzy presentation at first, but over time they developed into something huge.

They came with 25 categories in all and had their own show dedicated to them. Before, other television shows such as the Dinah Shore show would present the awards, but things had changed. The soap opera awards then stood on their own as a televised award show.

To this day the soap opera awards remain popular as people vote and watch their favorite characters receive awards for various reasons. Even when the awards went exclusively online in 2001, it is no wonder that the awards had to return to television.

A Satellite TV Installation Or Cable TV Installation?

Where ever you live this seems like a question that generates a lot of interest. I've done a little research and thought my answers maybe of interest to anyone prepared to read on. Personally I have a cable TV installation at the moment but seriously considering moving to a satellite TV installation.

I live in the UK but many of the responses I have seen have originated in the USA so don't stop reading you guys in North America. On balance I would say that more people preferred a Satellite TV to a cable TV installation. If I had been asked 5 or 10 years ago then I may still have answered cable TV but for very different reasons. I really believed that combining TV and other services into a cable would be everyone's answer but in practice satellite TV providers have moved more quickly to provide what the customer wants. There have been so many advances in technology that we seem to have far more choices than could been foreseen just a few years ago.

Some of the key points I have identified in my research are:-

- Satellite TV is an uninterrupted digital signal the only cable used in the connection is from the dish to your set. This, I understand, is why the quality of picture via a satellite transmission is regarded, by many, to be better than cable transmission.

- Satellite TV is prone to signal loss during heavy storms. This is information I have gathered from US users rather than here in the UK. Equally I read somewhere that to spray PAM on the dish every 3 months or so works wonders (if it is safe to access of course). The PAM treatment is a non stick coating which prevents rain sticking to the dish. [Do we have non stick rain in the UK or maybe the dish specification and manufacture is different?]. This obviously can not happen to a cable user but there many other ways in which cable transmission can be interrupted.

- Cable TV has it's supporters though. Installation is simple and there is no ugly dish attached to your property. This assumes that a cable is already installed in your neighbourhood.

- Cable providers frequently bundle or package other services which can help reduce your total costs for a computer network connection, telephone service and TV.

North America has had many cable networks for many years so the 2 players in the satellite TV services are providing some great promotions at the moment. Many companies are providing FREE equipment and installation packages in return for an ongoing subscription. Ironically Free SAT has just been launched in the UK which means you get 200+ channels for the one-time purchase price of a Free SAT box and installation of a satellite dish (if you don't already possess one). There is no on-going subscription with Free SAT. We also have SKY TV a regular subscription service with the premier channels (i.e. top sports events and most recent movies).

The next choice to be confronted with will be IP television this is television delivered via your computer network. Ironically this is perhaps why I thought cable meaning a cable into your property rather than cable TV would have been naturally ahead of satellite TV.

Time and the television watching public will reveal how we receive our visual images in the future. My vote for the moment is for a satellite TV installation.
