Guitar Hero History

The Year was 2005, and the world was about to be taken by storm by a video game unlike any other. We are talking of course about the one the only Guitar Hero for PS2. This incredible game was the first to take full advantage of a modular controller developed to mimic a Musical instrument and people loved it. Since 2005, the company that was once Harmonix was bought out by MTV Networks and would ultimately be responsible for the release of the Rock Band platform after relinquishing the Guitar Hero label to Activision.

Between the two platforms the viability of premium music downloads for video game platforms has become a reality. Since the launch of online support services across the leading platforms over 20 million tracks have been downloaded. Pair that with the increase in sales artists themselves have seen as a result of having their tracks in the game and the impact to the business of music has been unparalleled by any other musical innovation to date (even the distortion pedal!) It should also be noted that artists make more per track selling their downloads through than Guitar Hero than through iTunes.

As a whole, the series has released a total of 13 games and as of October 9, 2008, the series has sold 23 million units and earned US$1.6 billion at retail. The release of Guitar Hero 3 in North American raked in over $115 million in sales for Activision making it the biggest sales week in the history of the company and paralleling the big screen openings of movie like Iron Man, Spider Man 2 and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Unfortunately, as one would imagine those that aren't cashing in on the deal are quick to hire lawyers and point fingers. None have been so active in their litigation as legendary guitar maker Gibson. They have filed multiple suits in 2008 against not only Activision for using Gibson guitar likenesses but also the world's largest retailers (Wal-Mart, Amazon.com and a few others) for selling and distributing the games. They have also taken the extra step of going after MTV Networks stating the Rock Band is infringing upon them. In the past year, they have seen little success with any of their suits and they will likely be long and drawn out.

As gamers, we have been very fortunate that these types of suits have not been more prevalent between recording artists, music labels, managers and others in the music industry. Instead, we get to rock out to our favorite Guitar Hero games and with any luck we will have many more years of gaming to come.

Watching the Oscar's last night I was reminded that entertainment is our number one export to the world. I was also amazed at the following lessons that jumped at me:

First and foremost who does not get excited about the glitz and the red carpet. The Oscars are like the Super Bowl they are bigger than us. We should all strive to put on that large of a show for our customers.

1. Control the message and presentation of the message. Engage the audience by telling a compelling story and keep them engaged.
2. Tell a compelling story. You can not bore anyone into staying involved. Keep them engaged on the edge of their seats.
3. Engage and interact with the audience. People love to be involved we want to be as one with those on the screens.
4. Market your website and text accounts. Also push your product tell them how to order.
5. Keep them asking for more. Repeat business is the key. Know you lifetime value.
6. The underdog can win. Think of Hurt Locker vs Avatar
7. Family values do matter. Think of the Blindside
8. Make them walk down a red carpet to get to your product.
9. Believe in your product and strut it out because no one else will.

If we strive to entertain and tell a compelling story with our ads we can drive higher response rates and readership rates. To quote the late David Oligvy, "You can not bore anyone into buying your product." We all want to be entertained, no one does business with those that bore them. Make your clients walk down your red carpet.

Lord Vishnu In His Incarnation Was Called Vamana

The fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu is Vamana, or "dwarf incarnation", which occurred in Treta Yuga (the second age), long before the events described in Ramayana, and in strong association to the king Mahabali (some call him Maveli or Bali). Vamana is the first Avatar of Vishnu appearing in the completely human form.

Mahabali was a king of the Indian region presently known as Kerala (the Indian southern state bordering with Tamil Nadu), who stands behind the most popular legend - the Onam legend, which is a festival in celebration of the king Mahabali, who returns to the state of Kerala from underground every year.

Mahabali was Asura, but he was very religious and performed Vedic sacrifices. He was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. The king was wise, judicious and generous. He brought the era of wealth during his reign. Everybody was happy; there was no caste or class discrimination. The rich and the poor received equal treatment. There was no crime, no corruption. People did not even lock their doors, as there were no thieves in the kingdom. But because he was a descendant of Diti, who was a rakshasa, the Devas did not consider him to be safe.

Mahabali (also popularly called Maveli or Onathappan) is believed to have ruled in South India before the Ramayana event; and his empire is believed to have extended from the Vindhyas in the north to the far out in the south.

Asuras did not worship Vishnu. To test the King, Lord Vishnu disguised Himself as a poor Brahmin boy called Vamana. He came to the Kingdom of Mahabali as a dwarf Brahmin - the Vamana Avatar. Vishnu said he was a poor Brahmin and asked for a piece of land. The generous King said that he could have as much land as he wanted. The Brahmin said that he just wanted as much land as could be covered by his three steps. The king was surprised to hear such a humble request, and insisted that the boy ask for more. But the Brahmin again said the same thing.

Just as king Mahabali agreed to grant the land to a dwarf who would mark it with his three steps, Vamana began to expand and eventually increased himself to the size of cosmic proportions. With his first step the Brahmin boy covered the whole of earth and with the other step he covered the whole of the skies. He then asked king Mahabali where is the space for him to keep his third foot. The king realized that he was no ordinary Brahmin. Vishnu then offered him to go to Patala, which is a nether world. King Mahabali accepted this boon but asked to be allowed to visit Kerala once a year to make sure his people are doing well. Lord Vishnu agreed.

The Onam festival is celebrated mainly in the south Indian state of Kerala; it is perhaps the only major Hindu festival that celebrates the reign of an asura king, although a very good one.

Pandanda Review - Is This Virtual World Safe For Your Child?

Pandanda is an online virtual world targeted towards children aged 6-14. As members of Pandanda, kids can create a customized avatar, play games and chat with other members, alter their avatar's environment, win awards, earn coins, and use the said coins to unlock features of the game. The site provides a safe, cute online space for kids to interact with other children in a controlled environment.

In terms of features, Pandanda is like any other run of the mill virtual worlds. Children can customize their own avatar based on variations of a Red Panda (hence the name of the site) and alter the design of its "home" (a tree house). The main focus of Pandanda is to earn virtual "coins" either through games or even buying them outright, and using these coins to unlock various features such as clothing items, furniture for their avatar's home, etc. Although Pandanda is free at the moment, once its Beta period expires, parents can be expected to pay for access to the virtual world.

The artwork and design of Pandanda, despite being cute, is hardly extraordinary or very imaginative. Compared to some of the other, more popular virtual worlds, one can even call it somewhat Pedestrian. In an online virtual world designed specially for grade schoolers, the artwork is one of the major draws, and in this respect, Pandanda is a disappointment.

The concept of virtual coins and awards can be somewhat handy in teaching kids financial concepts, although this educational component is lacking in outright focus. The main draw of Pandanda for kids would be the fun of creating and customizing their character and its virtual "home". The site has a heavy focus on internet safety, and through several games, teaches kids the value of safe internet behavior. Since chatting with other players is an integral part of the Pandanda experience, there is a strong, safe chat mode that filters out any bad words or swear language. Pandanda's content itself is finely tuned for young children, and you won't find any references to sex, bad language, drinking, drugs, or smoking.

Pandanda is currently in Beta mode. All your children's earnings in the form of coins or awards will be reverted back to zero once this Beta mode is over. After that, you may be expected to pay for access to Pandanda in the form of an 'Elite' membership. However, Pandanda does not offer any innovative features or attractive artwork/design that might make paying for access to it a lucrative proposition. The cookie-cutter tableau of customized characters, safe chat mode, games and awards is hardly unique to Pandanda, and can be had in several other online virtual worlds for free. By deleting all your kids' awards and coins upon completion of the Beta period, Pandanda's approach seems to be to extort money from parents by hoarding their kids' hard earned rewards. A high unsavory monetization approach like leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Other than this extortion-monetization model, other things to look out for in Pandanda is its safe chat mode. While the filter does a good job of hiding/removing bad words in the English language, players in Pandanda tend to be from dozens of different countries, and the ability of the filter to remove bad words in other languages remains questionable. Having said that, Pandanda does an excellent job of giving parents strong control over their children's account. Parents are required to give an email address at the time of registration, and can change chat mode, or cancel the account at any time.

All in all, Pandanda offers a fun, lightweight distraction for your kid, with cute graphics and an easy to navigate interface. As an online virtual world, it provides a safe environment for your kids to interact with other children from across the globe. However, their membership model is as yet undetermined, and the likely model of 'Elite' memberships seems quite unsavory on paper. Unless Pandanda adds some more innovative features, paying for access to it remains a very unattractive proposition.

The Art of Giving a Toast

Today one of my clients is throwing one of her good friends a 40th birthday party. She actually used to date him and now they're good friends. She has the perfect dress, has supplied the beautiful country club for the party and now she was considering whether or not she should also give a host!

My answer to her? ALWAYS give a toast if you can!!!

First of all, whoever is throwing the party has a responsibility of welcoming people to the event. It's nice to publicly introduce yourself and welcome everyone. It also establishes your credibility when you speak in front of people

Next, it's an opportunity to show off! When people see you completely composed in a somewhat stressful situation, they're impressed. Little do they know how much preparation when on behind the scenes. You can make it look like you pulled the toast out of thin air!

When writing a toast, there are a few things to do that will make your job easier.

How do you want to come across? Do you want the toast to be fun, lighthearted and funny or do you want it serious? This will help you determine the "story" that you share during the toast.

How do you feel about the person? What do they mean to other people? How do people respond to them as individuals? Are they funny, articulate, smart, a great dresser or a terrific story teller? Be specific and write down all of the adjectives that you can to describe this person.

What is a funny story or a really great story that you can tell about this person? Is there some secret passion that this person has that causes them to spend excessive time on something? Was there a time that the two of you were together that impressed you or made you laugh? What story can you think of that EXPLAINS what this person is to you? This can be lighthearted or serious, depending upon the tone that you want to create in the room and with the toast.

Lastly, what does this person mean to YOU? Do you want to honor them? Do you love them? Do you admire them?

After you've put together your toast it should look something like this:

"Welcome to the 40th Birthday party for our friend Clyde. It's great to see everyone here. For those who know Clyde, you'll know that he is a determined, fun and successful individual. But there is something that you might NOT know about Clyde!!

Tell funny or poignant story here.... And when the laughter dies down..

"So tonight, we wish to honor you Clyde, for who you are to all of us. We appreciate you, we love you and we wish for you many more happy and healthy years to come."

The story that you tell is extremely important. But even MORE important is how often you practice this speech! Practice it in front of the mirror dozens of times until the words role off your tongue gracefully. Tape yourself as you practice and rewrite it as you go along. Practice visualizing yourself in the room beforehand, and practice looking at people in the eyes so during your speech you'll be able to do that with ease. During the last part, when you're bringing honor to the person, look at that person RIGHT in the eyeballs with as much sincerity as you can muster up, to let them know that you genuinely do care.

If you do all of these things, you'll blow the people away. The response you'll get is "wow, I wish I could just pull something like this out of my hat" and "that was such a great toast... good job".

No one has to know that you practiced over and over until it felt right. No one has to know that you changed the toast dozens of times until you got the story right. But what you and everyone else WILL know is that after you've given the speech and knocked it out of the park, your status will be elevated.

By presenting an incredible toast you will have created a great memory for the person you are honoring. And THAT is who its all about, after all!

I actually stopped working on a different video to a popular and awesome song to work on this, since youtube has been especially beastly as of late, what with the happy delete-fest and such. I'll probably continue that video in the near future, because it was coming along great ("In 7 Simple Rules"). Anyway, I present to you The Mighty Katara. Caution: You WILL Get Wet. But we love her. It can be argued that she is the second most crucial character to the show, since she kind of narrates the beginning and the Avatar would never have been discovered if not for her. After an indeterminable amount of 'time', simply experiencing being conscious became a little monotonous, so consciousness decided it would be nice to have a conversation about being conscious. Consciousness divided itself in two, and although both parts were aware they were one, discussed the experience of being conscious. The conversation was captivating for a while but—inevitably—it became cyclic and dull. "Let's play a game," said one half, "Let's pretend that being over there is more important than being over here." So they did. They spent 'time' moving back and forth, despite already being everywhere and nowhere at once. The mental exercise, suspending disbelief and discussing whether or not they were where they were, was thrilling, for a 'time' but - as before - it became repetitive and predictable. "I know," said the other, "Let's pretend that if I get over there before you, I win." So they did. They raced back and forth and took turns at winning, and they congratulated each other and the game was absorbing and interesting. 'Time' flew by. They divided and split and multiplied over and over, mitosis and cytokinesis, increasing the odds and making the race more and more exciting but, eventually ...
