What Are the Spiritual Messages in Avatar, the Movie?

My husband and I took our kids to see the movie Avatar during Winter break and we loved it so much we went back to see it again.

The reason why I loved the movie so much is because of one of its themes: "We are all one with each other, as well as with the animals, plants, trees and all of nature".

Here's a few examples of how this theme is demonstrated in the move:

The Na'Vi people live on a planet called Pandora. They can physically connect themselves to the consciousness of the animals and trees on their planet using tendrils at the end of their pony tails!

Meanwhile, the human scientists have discovered how to create physical bodies similar to that of the Na'Vis called Avatars. They have also invented a way for humans to connect consciously with these man-made, living, breathing, blue Na'Vi look-alikes and deposit them into the Na'Vi culture to mix and mingle with the natives for "research" purposes. To help visualize this, think The Matrix - but different.

Here's some other cool things about the Na'Vis:

They can hear the voices of their ancestors long gone and feel their spirit by literally plugging into the tree of voices.

It's also revealed that their planet has a network of trees which the Na'Vi can tap into and receive unlimited useful and life-saving data and information - a network which is more complex than the network of the human brain. This is yet another example of how the Na'Vi people are connected with each other, nature and their planet.

However, as you might suspect...the macho/military humans aren't interested in the so called "we are one with nature" sappiness and just want to steal the Na'Vis natural resources to save their dying earth no matter what the cost. (Yes, you can surely see another old, familiar theme emerging here: stealing the native's home right from under their feet.)

But still - like other human cultures both ancient and existing who live off the land and still hunt for their meals, the Na'Vi's senses are sharpened to survive in the forest. They remind me of the American Indians, the African tribes and the Australian aborigines with their rituals, skills and views of their world.

"I see you," is what they say to each other. Interpretation: "I see your soul. Your true essence. I see who you REALLY are." What a great message for kids and adults alike, although there's your typical fighting at the end.

Nickelodeon Channel has been established as cable TV network a long time ago, and it is well known in America and around the world. Initially, in 1979, when it was created, it was targeted for children and youth, but later attracted and an older audience attention. Especially, when Nickelodeon was broadcasting Avatar. This channel is accessible not only for American viewers, but also for Japan, Spain, Brazil, Australia, France, India, Germany, Norway, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and many, many other.

During this long lifetime Nickelodeon channel aired very large and different programs. However, one of the most memorable, in the U.S. and also around the world, is Avatar The Last Airbender TV Show. It consists of 3 Books and has been broadcasted for three seasons. For the first season - Water, the second - Earth and the third - Fire. The very first Book, the first season, was launched on 2005 February 21.

Nickelodeon Avatar has been developed on the basis of Asian culture. On this TV show, you will see Chinese and Japanese martial arts, religion - Hinduism and Buddhism. It is also full of magic moments, when a man, and to be more particularly 12 year-old boy, can control the air and other factors. This Nickelodeon Avatar TV Show is called the mix of anime and cartoon. Although it is often referred to be notable as the anime, but it is more like a cartoon style. All those character movements and mimics are more cartoon than a feature of the anime.

The main character of this TV show is the protagonist Aang, which was frozen in the piece of ice, and found by the brother and sister, Sokka and Katara. When Aang liberated from a piece of ice, he and his friends Sokka and Katara began to travel across the world, and to be more accurately, they flew with a large bison Appa. The Avatar wanted not only to learn to control all four elements - water, earth, fire and air, but when he traveled, he also was protecting the world from the Fire Nation. The whole world was ruled by Fire Nation. They terrorized a lot of people and took a lot of villages.

In the very beginning, Avatar could manage the air sufficiently good. Therefore, he could overcome the bad guys, Fire Nation people, and to protect himself and his friends. Fire Nation, which has pursued the Avatar, was led by Prince Zuko. Zuko constantly harassed Avatar because he wanted to arrest him. Sometimes he managed to catch Avatar and his friends, but since Aang could manage the air very good, he still to overcame Zuko and liberate himself and his friends.

In this TV Show, you can see the subject lessons, for both - children and adults. For example, in Book 1, was one situation that Aang friends, Sokka and Katara get angry and began a loud quarrel. Katara was angry that Sokka has built the tent poorly, and Sokka was angry, because Katara has brought a very little of scrap firewood to scrap fire. When they quarreled, came Aang, and suggested how to resolve this issue. He offered to swap works. Such lessons can be applied in life, because often enough, such disagreements occur between children. Therefore, when you are watching Avatar the Last Airbender, you can see not only the beautiful moments of fighting, a lot of action, unique character mime, but also you can learn something.

How Can I Do My Own Avatar Makeup?

No Avatar costume is complete without a great makeup and that is why most people has been asking "how can I do my own Avatar makeup?" Here is a few simple steps to do your own Avatar makeup.

1. Braid your hair:
This can be done on your own or get some helping hands. You may also substitutes for wigs. Hair is actually the most versatile part of Avatar makeup since you can style it to your desired look. 2. Put yellow contact lenses:
This is optional since colored contact lenses could cost you more than the whole costume itself. Your dark eyes would do just fine.

3. Foundation:
This is a good base for the blue color and also help degrease your skin so that you will have a smoother color application afterward.

4. Paint your face:
Now you can start painting your face including your ears using blue color face paint. It will be great to apply at least 2 layers of color for better results. If you plan to use elf ear tips, you might as well color those ear tips using blue acrylic paint. Let it dry.

5. Draw your eyebrows:
Using eyebrow pencil start shaping your eyebrows.

6. Re-create your eyes:
Using black eyeshadow you can give a dark tone around your eyes. This is optional, however for girls eyes will absolutely look sexier.

7. Put your stripes on:
After your base color which is the light blue has dried, you can start paint the stripes using dark blue facial paint. Draw these stripes starting from the outer side of your face moving inwards with the tip of the stripes all pointing to your nose.

8. Cat's eye:
Use eyeliner to create the cat's eye look. This will give you a staring-like eyes.

9. Put white dots:
Following the stripes pattern, draw the white dots onto you forehead.

10. Finishing touch:
You can finish your makeup with elf ears and fangs to give your makeup a real Avatar look.

How to Create an Animated Twitter Avatar

Want to stick out in the crowd of avatars on Twitter? Want to catch people's eye as they are scrolling down their tweets, or looking at other people's Followers? Then give an animated avatar a try!

The trick is, however, to find the line between eye-catching and annoyingly distracting. I've seen web cam video used as well as screen recordings. Slide show videos would work as well.

My first attempt was annoyingly distracting, and a Follower asked me to tone it down a bit - which I did. Some people will simply stop following, but that doesn't bother me. I love looking at other people's animations - it's like looking through a virtual window to their soul!

1. If you are going to use a video clip, pull it into a video editing program to grab about 4 seconds worth (Twitter avatars must be under 700 kb). Or create one from scratch, like a slide show video, web cam recording or slide show video. REMEMBER that it will LOOP over and over, so watch to make sure there isn't a jarring jump between the end and the beginning of the video. Windows Movie Maker, the Commercial Creation Center (http://www.CommercialCreationCenter.com) or Camtasia are great creation and editing tools - you just decide which one is easy enough for you to learn quickly. Save the video as a .wmv if you are NOT creating it in Camtasia. You'll see the directions below for how to "produce" it in Camtasia.

2. The most important thing Camtasia will do is produce the video as an animated GIF. If you have Camtasia (there's a free version available), you can do the creating, editing and outputting in there as well. Choose 150 x 112 pixels as the final size, which is the standard thumbnail size. If you don't want to use Camtasia, there is a site that will convert the video to GIF for you (http://www.gifninja.com), but the final file sizes are larger, so you will have to cut your video down even further, possibly to 2 seconds or so.

3. Upload your saved, animated GIF to your Twitter Account Photo. We've seen Firefox give error messages that Twitter is overloaded, but just keep going or switch to another browser. It will take eventually.

Get feedback from your followers about whether or not it is too busy, and refine your photo until you and your favorite followers are happy. But remember, you can't please everyone, so don't bother trying. If you're happy with it, then let yourself enjoy it, and change it around from time to time to break up the monotony.

Lessons to Be Learned From Avatar

Amidst all the action, 3D effects and looking like Woody Allen in my 3D glasses, the one thing that stood out for me from the film Avatar was this line:

"All energy is borrowed. Someday we must give it back"

Ignoring the tedious Gung-Ho subplot, this film made me think about life, and the world that we live in.

There are so many things wrong with our planet - the violence, illness, disease, cruelty, not to mention the natural disasters that we can't avoid...

On the planet of Pandora, where Avatar is set, life is idyllic.

Everyone co-exists without violence, greed, jealousy or selfishness.
